Meet Katie, Graduate Engineer at M-Sport

Thinking about applying to our 2027/28 graduate programme? Who better to ask than someone already doing the job? We sat down with Katie, one of our current Graduate Engineers, to find out why she chose rally, what she would tell you before you apply, and what the move from university to work is really like.

What did you study, and where?

I studied BEng Mechanical Engineering with Placement Year at Newcastle University.

What made you choose M-Sport?

I chose M-Sport because it gave me the chance to learn from some of the world leading engineers in motorsport, and to be part of one of the most successful teams, all working to deliver championship winning cars. The size of the team was a big draw too. I feel it gives me the best opportunity to learn, grow and progress while I am here. Rally also brings interesting and different challenges that track racing doesn't.

What advice would you give to the next cohort?

Do your research. Find out about the role and about M-Sport, then think about how your own experience and values line up with both. Think about what you could bring to the team too. That is a question I have always struggled with in applications and interviews, so it is worth working on early.

Get involved while you are still at university. If you are not already part of your Formula Student team, join. Even a small role helps, and any experience is good experience.

Start a personal project. If you can, have something on the go outside your studies or work. It could be designing and making something, or analysing data from race weekends. Anything that shows your passion for the sport is helpful.

How did you find the move from education to full time work?

Having done a placement year, I haven't found it too difficult. I enjoy the more structured days, and it is nice to have my evenings and weekends free without worrying about what I should be studying.
