I am a GCSE student who is looking for advice on the best career route within the motorsport industry – what can you suggest?
Firstly, we advise everyone to give their best at school, no matter on the career path you choose. It is important to learn and persevere, as most often success in motorsport is down to hard work and determination to be the best.
For those who are more practically minded, an Apprenticeship or Technical Training is the best route, as an alternative to A Levels and University. At M-Sport UK, we provide opportunities for interested and motivated students looking for an Apprenticeship or Technical Training within the motorsport industry, who prefer a more practical and hands-on way of learning. Apprenticeships allow you to earn whilst you learn your trade and gain valuable experience on the job from some of the best in the business.
For engineering-based roles within the motorsport industry, this requires a strong set of grades at GCSE level to set the foundations. This includes Maths and Science, along with the further options of Design & Technology, or Mechanics. This solid foundation will allow you to study further into A Levels, which we advise you study either Maths (essential), Physics, Chemistry, and Design & Technology. After A Levels, this will allow you the opportunity to further your studies by doing an Engineering degree in a relevant discipline i.e. Motorsport, Automotive, or Mechanical.
I would like a career within the motorsport industry – how can I achieve this and gain experience?
It is important to get practical experience before entering the world of motorsport, so we recommend trying to use any free time i.e. weekends, gap year, or holidays to get some. This could either be paid employment or free volunteering in your local car garage, or a junior/grass-level motorsport team. Should you choose to go down the university route, joining your universities Formula Student, Karting, or other Motorsport Team is a great way of gaining hands-on experience, whilst working in a team environment full of fun and likeminded individuals.
Can I do work experience at M-Sport UK?
Yes, our work experience is aimed towards year 10 -13 students (aged 14 – 18) who are looking to gain an insight into how our global motorsport team operates. The purpose of the week is to allow students the chance to understand the various roles and career opportunities within motorsport, whilst providing them chance to learn the key foundations of how to get there. However, due to the health & safety nature of a factory environment, and confidentiality nature of our industry, work experience is limited in numbers (i.e. first come first service) and certain departments such as Design & Engineering and Manufacturing (Fabrications & Machine Shop). You will all need to fund your own travel and accommodation during the week.
