After an early attempt at Rally Finland in a World Rally Car in 2002, Urmo Aava first came to most people's attention in the 2WD 1600cc Junior World Rally Championship. Aava joined Suzuki's Junior World Rally Team in 2003 and over the next five seasons enjoyed considerable success with both the Ignis and, latterly, the Swift J-WRC car. He won two J-WRC events; Turkey in 2006 and Sardinia in 2007 and finished second in the series in 2006 and 2007.

In 2007 Aava begun the process of converting to 4WD category and contested three rallies in a WRC class Mitsubishi Lancer, finishing seventh overall in Finland and eighth on the model's final WRC appearance in New Zealand.

For 2008 Aava and his Estonian backers negotiated a deal for him to contest 10 rounds in a Citroen C4 WRC under the 'World Rally Team Estonia' banner. Aava's season kicked off in Sweden and in addition to ten WRC events he also took part in his home event, the South Estonian Rally. Aava impressed throughout the year, claiming a number of stage wins and achieving a career-best fourth place on the Acropolis Rally.

In 2009 Aava, and co-driver Kuldar Sikk, are planning an eight rally programme with the Stobart VK M-Sport Ford Rally Team in a Ford Focus RS WRC.
