Having launched his career in 2001 and enjoying two successful years co-driving at a national level in the UK, Martin then teamed-up with, the then, 17-year-old Matthew Wilson in 2004. In his first full year of the British Rally Championship with Wilson and the Eddie Stobart Motorsport team Martin finished an impressive second outright co-driver.
His best result came on the Trackrod Rally with a well-deserved third placing, and the results continued as he finished 13th overall on WRC debut in Wales. The pair also contested four national events in 2004, winning every one overall.
After a successful season Martin was accepted into the prestigious MSA British Rally Elite Scheme, which hand-picked a select few from Britain's finest young rally talent to be given the best sports science and skills training in order to aid their career development.
2005 was a rollercoaster year in every sense of the term for Martin. The year began in disastrous fashion as he and Wilson were involved in an almost career-ending accident on the opening round of the BRC, Rally of Wales. However, what almost destroyed the young co-driver only made him stronger - as he took his first-ever international win on the Trackrod Rally with Wilson only weeks after recovering from the horrific accident.
2006 saw Martin step into the world scene with Scottish driver Barry Clark as they took on the Fiesta SportingTrophy international series in its inaugural year. Competing for the Stobart Motorsport squad Martin finished an amazing third in the FSTi series and third in the S1600 category of the BRC, which he also competed on with Clark.
His successful venture with the Scottish driver continued into 2007, as the pair won the opening five rounds of the FSTi series to have the title comfortably secured with two events remaining. This was Martin's first international series win - all at the age of just 25.
2007 became an even more educational year for the Englishman when he took on the Production World Rally Championship with former BRC champion Mark Higgins, as these PWRC events did not clash with his FSTi duties. By the final round he was deemed third overall co-driver in the PWRC - after a year-long battle which went down to the final event.
2008 saw Martin back in a familiar seat as he contested his first full year of the WRC with Matthew Wilson in the state-of-the-art Ford Focus RS WRC07. A consistent season saw the pair notch up six points finishes - including an overall fifth-place in Jordan - and take a significant step forward in their outright pace, recording split times similar to those of rally winners.
In 2009 Martin will sit alongside Wilson as they tackle a full FIA World Rally Championship campaign in the Stobart VK M-Sport Ford Rally Team using the 08 evolution of the record-breaking Ford Focus RS WRC, with continued backing from the UK-based Stobart Group.
