| Munchi's Ford World Rally Team |
Embarking on its fifth campaign in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) is the Munchi's Ford World Rally Team. Named after a popular chain of ice cream parlours in Argentina, the team ran a Ford Focus RS WRC from 2007 to 2010 before switching to the all-new Ford Fiesta RS WRC for the start of the 2011 season. In 2007, despite both being successful competitors in their home country of Argentina, 9 times Argentinean National Rally champion, Federico Villagra, and his co-driver, Jorge Perez Companc, were two of the least experienced international rally competitors in the field. Unsurprisingly their goal for the season was to learn; to familiarise themselves with the rallies and to improve their pace as they went along. Looking back at the season that's exactly what they did. For the 2008 season Villagra led the Munchi’s Ford World Rally Team driver line-up and was joined over the year by Luis Perez Companc, Norway’s Henning Solberg and Scotsman Barry Clark. Villagra had an excellent start to his 2008 WRC campaign earning two points with a seventh-place finish at Rally Mexico. He followed up this early promise with his two best WRC finishes to date taking sixth place at both Rally Argentina and Rally Jordan. Despite finishing outside the points in his next three races and suffering a retirement at Rally Finland, Villagra came back strongly to finish eighth at Rally New Zealand. He finished the 2008 season in 14th place in the Drivers’ championship with nine points. 2009 saw the Munchi’s Ford World Rally team contest eight rallies in Cyprus, Portugal, Argentina, Sardinia, Greece, Finland, Australia and Spain. With a healthy amount of experience under their belts and the competitiveness of the Ford Focus RS WRC, the Argentinean duo of Villagra and Campanc gathered a strong haul of 16 points in the 2009 season. They also had their best WRC finishes, finishing both the Acropolis Rally and Rally Argentina in fourth position overall. Under 2009’s newly relaxed FIA rules which allows WRC teams to enter only one car on each event, Villagra and the Munchis team contested 8 rounds of the WRC calendar. The team began its campaign at Rally Mexico with further rallies in Jordan, Turkey, New Zealand, Portugal, Japan, France and Spain, finishing the year with 58 Manufacturer points. In 2011, Munchi’s Ford World Rally Team returns to the WRC once again. This year Villagra will contest nine rounds of the WRC, starting at Rally Mexico in the all-new Ford Fiesta RS WRC.
